LET’S HIT IT! Join the Universal Drumming World Rhythm Series with Jeni Swerdlow, MA-ATR. Drummers & the “drum-curious” are invited to come together through universal rhythms & global grooves. Travel around the world learning first-hand about music & culture through the beat of the drums.

Open to ALL levels, you’ll discover how to make your drum sing & your spirit soar! Beginning-beginners are especially encouraged, even if you think you are “rhythmically challenged”.

This popular upbeat class will meet for 6 sessions on the 1st & 3rd Sundays in October through December at 11:00am-12:30pm. Located at Gamelan Sekar Jaya, 3023 Shattuck Ave (near Ashby Ave), Berkeley, CA.

Each month we’ll focus on a different region of the world. Register for all 6 sessions, sign up for 2 in a month, or drop-in for a single class – your choice!

Specific Dates/Regions Covered:

  • OCT 6 & 20 – West Africa
  • NOV 3 & 17 – North Africa/Middle East
  • DEC 1 & 15 – South America

No drum? No problem! Reserve one for $5 per session. Please bring your own seat, as seating in the studio is limited.

  • Learn proper hand-drumming technique & FUNdamentals
  • Explore the connection between rhythms from various cultures around the world
  • Participate in ensemble playing with fun, dynamically arranged compositions
  • Discover your own unique “voice” on the drum – and more!

COST:

  • Cost for the 6-session series is $150
  • Cost for 2 sessions in the same month is $60
  • Cost for a single drop-in session is $35 (space permitting)
  • Bring a drum (Djembe or similar) or reserve one for an additional $5 per session, or $30 for the whole series
